The desire for security in the face of a sudden insecurity is overwhelming sometimes, causing us to disregard even the commands of God or the rule of common sense in order to grasp onto something concrete, something immediate, some surrogate for what we suddenly lack.
The church, carrying as it does the title “Body of Christ,” very logically provides that surrogacy for a lot of people . . . right?
